Emma Wood

I am inspired by the wildlife I see around me in the UK, and by encounters I had as a field researcher in the Kalahari and in Northern Cyprus.

I focus on the behaviour of wildlife in its natural habitat in both my watercolour paintings and ceramic and mixed media sculptures.

In the latter I often use the thrown form to give a suggestion of the environment, leaving spaces to incorporate natural materials. In my sculptural work I have recently been exploring the use of windows into the interior of pots to bring the viewer in close, replicating the way I find myself become engrossed in the detail of a scene or the macro world of insects. I use urushi (Japanese lacquer) and precious metals to mend and/or enhance pieces with traditional Kintsugi. This (coincidentally) reflects the fragility of the natural world and our ability to restore it provided we value it enough.
