My practice is visually informed by my perceived experience of the landscape I grew up on. I weave this into my pieces through intuitive approach to textile art creating a layered, stitched and worked up surface pattern reminiscent of the rugged moorland and rocky terrain. The nautical colours present throughout my work reflect the moody cerebral state I find myself in when I am immersed in this landscape. With personal tendencies to collect, I am deeply interested in the emotional symbiosis with our belongings. It felt natural for me to create a body of work that captures the essence of my inspiration as well making adornments to treasure for a lifetime.
The creative process has been a journey of introspection into understanding my relationship to my homeland and my own visual identity. I feel that the colours that absorb us and the possessions we hold on to are of no coincidence and have an inherent connection to our early experiences, relationships and environment.
Working with fabric allows me to immerse myself in a more playful process that lends itself to more creative control than that of setting stones or other more traditional silversmithing methods. Combining this with my more technical skill set within metalwork, I create little components or ‘portals’ that are worked up into jewellery.
