I paint in oils, working from my studio at the foot of the Malvern Hills, and en plein air. The combination of technical challenge and flexibility that oil paints present is very appealing to me. I enjoy exploring how paint can convey mood and atmosphere, encapsulate a sense of place, and capture a moment in time.
Composition is the first challenge, but once that is decided, I can focus on aspects of painting that really interest me: the relationship between colours and shapes that generate the character of the work, and which - for me - evolve as the painting takes shape. The subjects I am drawn to are varied: figures lost in thought; alleyways and paths, shadows cast by buildings or trees; clouds racing above landscape.
I would describe my style as direct and loosely figurative. The most enjoyable and successful work typically starts with direct observation, and sketching is often a valuable part of the process.
In my professional life, I worked in journalism and communication. I have enjoyed various painting groups and classes over the years, but I don't have a formal art training. However, just before turning 60, I discovered the inspirational teaching of British contemporary artist, Martin Kinnear, founder of the Norfolk Painting School, and completed his Diploma Course in oil painting in 2019.
